Plas Meddyg Surgery is helping shape the future of general practice by supporting the training of GP Registrars and Medical Students.

Training Practice

Plas Meddyg Surgery is a training practice that provides support to medical students and postgraduate doctors pursuing a career in general practice (GP Registrars).

The staff at Plas Meddyg Surgery are dedicated to offering the highest level of care and treatment to all our patients. They assist patients in managing chronic diseases such as asthma and diabetes and offer a wide variety of other medical services including same-day emergency care, anticoagulation, minor surgery, contraception, vaccinations, and ward-based care to patients in Ruthin Community Hospital.

This comprehensive support system ensures that the medical students and trainee doctors receive a well-rounded training experience. The team is professional and friendly, fostering a positive learning environment. Their efforts are often praised by the medical students and trainee doctors following their placements.

What does this mean for our patients?

Registrars

We train postgraduate doctors who have worked in hospitals and are gaining experience in general practice. These doctors are called Registrars and are all fully qualified doctors, forming an essential part of our team.

As a training practice, patients are able to see a wider range of clinicians whilst allowing the surgery to benefit from the ideas and approaches brought by young, enthusiastic doctors.

In order for the Registrars to complete their training, they need to be assessed on their consulting skills. They may, from time to time, ask for their trainer’s input into your consultation or treatment plan. This is part of their learning and you should not be concerned.

If your appointment is with a Registrar, you can expect to receive the same quality of service that you would receive from your own GP.

Students

We work closely with Bangor, Cardiff and Swansea Universities to offer placements to Medical Students.

When you book an appointment to see a doctor, they may be accompanied by a student. As an essential part of their learning, the student will observe and may conduct part of your consultation, under the guidance of the doctor.

Students in their final year of Medical School will see patients without another doctor present in the room. If your appointment is with a final-year student, you should expect a longer appointment. Our student mentors operate a robust review system of consultations carried out by final-year students, so patients can expect the same quality of care that they would receive from one of our doctors.

  • Plas Meddyg Surgery has been a training practice for many years and we hope that our patients will continue to welcome and support our Registrars and Students.
  • We believe training GPs is an essential part of our commitment to the development of high-quality general practice for future generations.

What our registrars say about us:

Dear All,

I hope this mail finds you well. I am writing to inform you that today marks my last day here in the Surgery. It has been an incredible journey working alongside every one of you, and I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for your support and guidance throughout my time here.

Your encouragement, expertise, and patience have truly made a difference in my experience as a trainee. I have learned so much from each of you, both professionally and personally, and I am deeply appreciative of the opportunities I've had to grow and develop within this team.

As I move forward in my career, I will carry with me the invaluable lessons and experiences gained during my time here.

I want to wish each and every one of you the very best in your future endeavours. May you continue to achieve great success and fulfilment in your roles, and may our paths cross again in the future.

What our students say about us:

Swansea CA1 Student

All staff were very engaged in our learning and making sure we were getting the most of the clinics and sessions. Whilst also tailoring questions and teaching opportunities to that of a medical student at my stage of learning. The timetable was very effective in making sure that we had access to all teaching opportunities i.e. minor ops clinics and joint injection clinics

Dr Wade Rebelo, GP partner and our placement supervisor: Wade was very friendly, approachable and took an active interest and took an active interest in our learning and sought out opportunities to help further develop our experience on placement. He asked questions that while challenging was not too difficult but also allowed us to think beyond our remit and broaden our learning. I found this very helpful in aiding learning and expansion of my knowledge. He also taught me how to better interact with patients and I believe he will have a very positive impact and shape my future career in medicine, in how I treat future colleagues and future medical students I will encounter. Dr Harish Medagedara, GP Partner: Harish took an active interest in my learning and helped me to see patients/take histories, allowing me to gain confidence in my medical knowledge and communication skills. He was very friendly and made me feel comfortable and valued as a medical student.

Everyone at the practice was fantastic! Wade was a brilliant tutor. He was eager to teach and take the time to ensure we understood the topic fully. He allowed us to get involved where appropriate and he made every consultation into a learning experience. Tim was fantastic with his patients, and it was really impressive to observe how he interacted with his patients during his consultation. Laura, Angharad and Gwenno were amazing throughout the 5 weeks and were eager to support us throughout our clinical skills, in addition to allowing us to grasp a deep understanding of the role and importance of nursing. Tracey was a key person during our placement as she coordinated our time at Plas Meddyg and deserves a big thank you for looking after us. Thank you to everyone!
